Review: The Saboteur

This third person action/stealth/sandbox adventure is the swansong of Pandemic Studios, forced to close their doors after the debacle of finances surrounding EA this year. The game itself tells the tale of Sean Devlin, an Irish race driver living and working in France at the time of the German occupation during World War 2.

Sean gets drawn into his own localised war after the death of his best friend, and has his own personal story to tell which neatly sidesteps most of the well trodden tales of the Call of Duty/Medal of Honor series, and instead offers us a more personal, yet generally lighter adventure.

If you’ve ever heard the mantra “Do one thing, but do it right”, Trine embodies it. That one thing was simple, intelligent interaction. And my goodness, did they do it right. The story sounds like something from a Disney movie and doesn’t really suck you in like many other fantasy action/adventure games. There are points in the game, where if you stopped to consider the level you are currently in, it would make no sense at all. But you quickly forget all of that once you start playing.

Review: East India Company

Hit the high seas with a blend of strategy, economics and straight out warfare as the head of a major trading company in the 17th century!

East India Company is one of those games that seems to be aimed at a niche market. Forgoing fast paced action, EIC is more of a cross between Civilisation and a business management sim, as you take control of an international trading company and its fleets, buying and selling around the world, and defending yourself and your ports from attack from your competitors.

Get your friends online, turn down the lights, as those darned infected are back with a vengeance! Valve have released the sequel to last year’s hit, Left 4 Dead, amidst controversy, boycotts, and rabid fan-boy enthusiasm, and once again turn gamers loose in their post-apocalyptic world.

Review: Tales of Monkey Island Season 1

All in all it feels that my appetite for Monkey Island has been satiated (for now). It’s been almost a decade since the last installment of Monkey Island and so expectations were sky high, and to be fair, Telltale has been able to deliver in most departments.

This is perhaps the most eagerly awaited episode (since the first one), therefore many of you are probably wondering if it lives up to its hype. Well let me put it this way - it is perhaps the most exciting and wacky episode of the entire season. And as we all know, for Monkey Island, the wackier the better!

The ambience is easily the best out of all the chapters. From the very opening where we start off on 'the other side'(Guybrush is 'dead') until the very last minute of the game, a very pure ‘Monkey Island’ environment is created. If any of the previous chapters failed to make you feel that giddy Monkey Island feeling, then this one will for sure. The ambience also compliments the plot which is quite intriguing.

Well, as you may have guessed by the title - this episode kicks off with the trial of our beloved hero who is accused of (absurdly) horrible crimes. Although some of these are bogus, some are true and if convicted of any one of these attrocities, the punishment is nothing less than death. This episode gets off to a very strong start, with the whole set up giving way to some hilarious moments.

The whole pirate court system is a joke, especially once you discover that the Judge is also the owner of Club 41 next door and during recess he can be found mixing up drinks. He also seems very casual about Guybrush wandering around free during his trial! I must mention that solving each charge laid against Guybrush is very intriguing and entertaining and does not get tedious at any point.

For those of you keeping up with the episodes, you know the last one ended on quite a dramatic note. This chapter opens with some serious gags and the writing is superb. Telltale seem to be getting better and better at this (which is what we were hoping for!). As the chapter starts you are trapped inside a giant manatee and without giving too much away, you encounter some very new and unique characters and we also witness the return of another fan favourite.
