All in all it feels that my appetite for Monkey Island has been satiated (for now). It’s been almost a decade since the last installment of Monkey Island and so expectations were sky high, and to be fair, Telltale has been able to deliver in most departments. 

What Telltale has done very well is to recreate the whole Monkey Island environment through consistently intriguing characters, twisted storyline, humor and music that earns it a spot alongside any other MI installment. They brought back many of the old characters and further developed them in a meaningful way. They also introduced new characters in a manner that leaves a lasting impression on the audience. All five episodes have kept the momentum going through a strong overall story arc that has proved ultimately rewarding.

One of the most  glaring setbacks seem to be the graphics, perhaps with Telltale’s limited budget this is the best they could do, but they seem very aged (at least a generation or two behind) compared to what we expect from games these days. After a while you do get used to them, but it’s definitely an area for vast improvement.

As for the actual gameplay, the early episodes provided great puzzles. However it almost felt that the later chapters started to run out of ideas in that department. This resulted in puzzles being a bit too easy. 

There are both good things and bad about the ‘episodic’ system. Personally, I’m not a big fan of it, because I feel it harms the continuity of the game. But if this means more Monkey Island then I’m not complaining! And as I’ve mentioned previously, I was not happy with the absence of the Island itself (Monkey Island) from this season. However, this, along with a few past characters that didn’t make it this time around leaves something to look forward to next season….
