As I wrapped up Episode 1: Launch of the Screaming Narwhal, I knew things just had to get better. And I was right: Siege of the Spinner Cay recreates the "Monkey Island" feeling much more vividly. Even though it may not be as funny as the first one, it is most definitely a lot more fun! While the first episode managed to capture my interest here and there, this chapter had me glued to the screen all night. Even though essentially the graphics engine is the same, I loved the color scheme and the island settings this time around. Spinner Cay looks beautiful, and so do all the surrounding Islands (including the small ones). The music is spot on as well which amplifies the Monkey Island sentiment. Even the storyline is taking an interesting twist, as in the beginning we encounter another femme fatale who is a mercenary out to get Guybrush, but at the same time she is quite obsessed and impressed with him. It will be interesting to see where that ends up. To top it all off there is a strange bond forming between Elaine and 'good' Le Chuck… things are getting crazy! I can't stress enough how this really felt like a Monkey Island game, and that in itself is a compliment. I just hope the next few chapters are of a decent length - and keep up this quality. This chapter felt a bit shorter than the first, and partly because it was a lot easier as well. I'm not sure if that is necessarily a bad thing (being easier and all) but you take that as you will. To be honest, I wasn't sure if Telltale Games had what it took to recreate this groundbreaking series, but so far I am quite impressed. I just can’t wait to see what happens next. |
