The movie covers the story of the infamous bank robber and gangster John Dillan (Johnny Depp) who is chased by Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale) and the birth of the FBI. With John Dillan robbing a lot of banks, the government labelled him Public Enemy No. 1. The FBI concentrates on catching John Dillan in order prove the need for their establishment. The movie stars heavyweights Johnny Depp and Christian Bale. In addition the movie is about the infamous John Dillan and the birth of the FBI. The movie, as one would expect, had everything it needed to be a memorable experience. However it is the ambitious scope that leads to the downfall of this movie. Due to time constraints, the movie moves at a frantic pace. The movie constantly jumps from one scene to the next. We see various aspects of John Dillan’s life, but because the scenes are short and move fast, they fail to develop the character. John Dillan was favoured by the public and used this to his advantage by hiding amongst the people. Instead of emotionally engaging the audience and having us care about Dillan, we are simply told that we should. Furthermore the scenes in which Christian Bale chases Johnny Depp lack any sort of tension. This is again because the scenes are short and move at a fast pace. Things don’t develop, they just happen in the movie. It is the constant jumping from one short scene to the next that makes the movie hard to follow and greatly hampers any chance of character development. The movie runs at about two and a half hours. I felt that it may be the case that the scenes had to be cut short and have them end abruptly due to time constraints. If that was the case, the final editing had destroyed the soul of the movie. Due to the large scope of the movie, it may have been a better idea to divide it into two parts. |
