Genre: Action/ Adventure/ Superhero The Golden Army is a huge upgrade to the 2004 release “Hellboy”, making us appreciate the superheroes we didn’t really enjoy watching the first time around.
I was in-between giving the movie an A- or a B+, and then I saw “Batman: The Dark Knight”, which raised my standards for rating superhero movies. So here I am. Similar to “The Incredible Hulk”, The Golden Army takes a superhero movie that hadn’t done so well, and makes a more than compelling movie out of it. A less well-known superhero (as opposed to the more famous Spiderman, Superman, etc) the man-devil is in a quest to save the world once more, with the aid of his trusted team consisting of the cute and charismatic Liz and the amphibian Ape. In this movie, Guillermo del Toro uses some of the tricks that made Pan’s Labyrinth such a big hit, namely his wonderful presentation of mythical creatures. For example, having a creature whose eyes are on his wings sounds freaky, but when put in a context of a fairy-tale deadly creature, it is a work of art. Watching Hellboy II: The Golden Army would make the viewer fall in love with the character the 2004 production tried, and didn’t dramatically succeed, to present us with. He’s still the big bad bully who needs to register to some anger management program; however, he was also funny with the way he acted, his choice of words, and his facial expression. Him fighting was not only about having more muscle mass, but was also about having some brains and the help of friends. Moreover, Prince Nuada, son of King Balor and a fiend who’s trying to rule over the world, portrays an evil character that you can’t but cheer for. The reason behind his war is logical (well, depending on how much credit you give human-kind for destroying planet earth) and he shows respect for his opponents. In short, he’s honorable. It is kind of like having a good bad-guy battling a bad good-guy. Oh, yeah, did I mention Nuada’s slick ninja moves?? Final word: definitely a movie worth seeing, with an entertaining story line, more than good graphics, enjoyable action sequences, and fascinating characters.
