Genre: Comedy This all-star cast comedy is a satire on Hollywood and its actors and actresses at its present day. Fortunately the cast deliver a strong performance and provide the audience with constant laughs and hopefully a message to the current Hollywood players.
It is hard to write a review for a comedy when trying to avoid any spoilers and jokes. For that purpose I will try to keep the review as short as possible. The biggest test for a comedy is to provide laughs constantly throughout a movie. Tropic Thunder sets the bar high from the onset as it starts with a bang. Even though the introduction may have been the best part of the movie, the movie succeeds in maintaining the momentum up to the very end. Contrary to Meet the Spartans and the upcoming Disaster Movie the jokes in the movie are of high quality making it a smart satire. I do hope that the creators of the former movies take a leaf from Tropic Thunder's book and learn to produce something that does not make you feel a drop in IQ level once you watch them. For example Tropic Thunder attacks the attributes of Hollywood instead of simply doing a "point and laugh" accompanied by "fart" jokes. When I said the performance is good I am not saying that lightly. Specifically Robert Downey Jr's performance is absolutely spectacular and Oscar nomination worthy. The movie also features Tom Cruise in unrecognizable fashion which could lead to his comeback, considering all the negative publicity that has surrounded him in the recent past. Oh, and the story is that a movie is being produced with three megastars. Those three are Ben Stiller, the action movie star that has yet to win an Oscar; Jack Black, the drug addict and Robert Downey Jr, an Australian (Yes Aussie) actor that has won numerous Oscars already. The movie shooting does not seem to be working out so the director decides to take his actors to an unknown region to shoot a movie with a more realistic feel. Final word: Tropic Thunder is a smart and great welcome to the adult comedy genre which recently seems to have become full of pot smoking and shallow jokes. Even now at two days later, thinking back to some of the jokes in the movie continue to make me smile.
