X-Men Origins: Wolverine follows the story of Logan from his days as a child in British Columbia until right before where the first movie, X-Men, began. From here on, several mutants make brief cameo appearances but the limelight is firmly fixed on Logan, which could’ve been entertaining except the character is portrayed as one dimensional. Unfortunately, right from the start, the story lacks any real depth, plot, or character development. Many of the plot twists that do occur are predictable and mundane leaving viewers wondering why the waited so long for it. It almost seems as though the writers made up pieces of the story as they went along. The movie doesn’t fit in with the events of the other three movies, the cartoons, or the comics, which will leave pretty much everyone disappointed. Wolverine is neither animalistic enough to justify his name, nor heroic enough to make him a hero. In fact, he spends most of his time screaming, which explains why there was so little character development. To be fair, the movie did have sequences which were decent. Some of the fight scenes were pretty good, and there were hints of Wolverines classic sarcasm on display. Unfortunately, the film was too Wolverine-centric and portrayed all mutants other than Sabretooth as being useless or unimportant. All in all, the movie had potential, but was a tremendous let down. As a movie its pretty bad, as an action movie its subpar.
