Genre: Aliens / Thriller

Although not ground breaking, it  is entertaining and makes one think of how we should react to first contact from aliens.

What it’s about:

The Day the Earth Stood Still is a remake of a 1950s movie of the same name. The concept of the movie is to remind ourselves that we are leading towards our own destruction. An alien named Klatuu comes along to tell us to change or be wiped out in order to preserve Earth. The original was the threat of nuclear bombs destroying the world. This one is about the worldly conflict and environmental harm humans are doing to this world. That being said, the movie does not specifically tell us what we are doing wrong, is it the conflicts, global warming or the increase in obesity and culture of couch potatoism. It just tells us to change, one would have been more appropriate had McCain won the presidency.

What I enjoyed about the movie:

I thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere the movie created about total anarchy right from the start as the USA gathered its top scientists and put them up in the air and preserve them in fear of the world being destroyed.

The confusion that was created where nobody really knew what was going on and how to exactly react was believable. The whole alien science and the way they were able to enter the Earth was also believable, as ironic as that sounds. One of the best parts of the movie for me was how effortlessly humans were getting their asses kicked as would be expected by a species that is clearly superior to humans (as evidenced by them being able to reach us before we could them). Again believability!

I generally enjoy Keanu Reeves movies even when most critics don’t like them. They feel different and are always entertaining. If you haven’t already watch Constantine and A Scanner Darkly.

Something to ponder:

Evidence of a good movie is something that makes you think. This movie made me think, not about how we are destroying the earth, but rather how we should react if aliens ever landed on this Earth. It is a scary thought that if there is a trigger happy or nervous world leader that decides to have first contact with the aliens to be that of violence, it could lead to an all out war and lead to our extinction. It’s a scarier thought thinking how close Sara Palin came to presidency. This is why I would request any aliens reading this that want to come in peace, land in Canada and not the USA.

What this movie is not:

It is not a clear all out action movie. One should not go into this movie expecting a large war with the humans ending up defending earth. Its not that type of movie. Also the movie is not very good movie. The script is not as strong and is the thing that is the weakest link. Movie budgets are in millions, why not pay a bit more for a better script, after all scripts are the backbones for movies.

Final Word: Entertaining movie, not an action movie, more of a thriller. Gives you something to think.
