Finally, we can toss away the lame protective masks and deal with virus outbreaks in a more efficient manner: by blowing the shit out of the infected!

What Hell Happened to Me?

Something ‘awful’ has happened that has made Alex Mercer one of the most powerful shape shifter on the face of the planet. Naturally, instead of rejoicing, he has sworn to get to the bottom of this, find out who did this to him and destroy him. So this translates into Mercer obliterating a vast line of armored vehicles, helicopters, military bases, buildings, super soldiers and of course, the infected.

You are thrown into the middle of the action at once and the adrenaline never lets up throughout the game. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about the feeling of invincibility bestowed upon you at the start of the game. Very quickly you realize that if you don’t act sharp, then you will be killed. Although a little inconsistent, this was necessary to create an environment with a strong sense of urgency and danger.

Yes, we are in New York:

You can’t help but notice the beautiful visuals of this game and perhaps not as stunning as Liberty City, Manhattan still dazzles in its own ‘full of infected individuals’ way. The music is nothing extraordinary but helps in intensifying the action on screen from time to time.

The best part about the storyline is that it actually gets more intriguing as it progresses, thanks in large part to the very diverse set of missions here. At no stage does the game feel like it is getting repetitive, which is quite an accomplishment for an action game. There is also a real cinematic feel to it(thanks to the narrative and storyline) that is reminiscent of a good zombie flick; where the threat escalates and eventually the only option left is to wipe out the entire city..

Having said that, one thing that needs to be pointed out is, some of the cut-scenes with the flashing images are just plain garbage, especially the ones that appear after consuming people.

You can do that, too:

The wide array of moves and smooth controls do well to add to the longevity of the game play. It’s hard not to get distracted and spend time just running up buildings, gliding from place to place, skyjacking helicopters and slicing up hordes of people and consuming them for power. One of the major attractions of the game is the ability completely overpower your opponents.

From taking down a helicopter by means of a flying kick or to elbow drop a tank, there are enough moves and combos to fill your appetite for causing chaos and destruction in a healthy variety of ways. As you progress through the game, you can acquire ‘upgrades’ that improve not only your moves, but other attributes such as speed and how far you can jump. Among the powers you can unlock include whipfist – where your arm extends can extend a ‘modest’ distance of a few blocks and you can use that to either destroy or even grab and hold on to a helicopter and eventually jack it. One of the most powerful powers are the ‘blade’, since once you have the blade, you can easily destroy heavy artillery such as tanks in a couple of slices (otherwise it would take a few more punches). Claws, muscle-mass and stealth consume are among the many other fun and creative ways to explore and reshape the city.

Aim here:

Speaking of variety, the game again has done a good job with providing a satisfying array of opponents, ranging from large to larger to a massive climax with Elizabeth Greene (no pun intended). With that being said, there is actually a large sense of disappointment with the ‘final boss’. Given the logical progression of size and strength of opponents, one would have expected him to be the biggest, meanest, ugliest m@therfu#ker in the game and yet he was none of those things. That further spoiled the not-so-great ending.

Best of all Worlds:

Apart from the petty nuisances, this is one of the most fun, satisfying and exciting action games I have played in a while. It takes the best elements from many games before it (with noticeable similarities to the Hulk, God of War and Assassin’s Creed) and implements them flawlessly. Furthermore, with a lengthy but engaging storyline and the option to finish the game and replay (with all powers unlocked), this game provides more than your money’s worth.
