Pixar’s latest animated film, Up, follows 78-year-old Carl Fredricksen as he sets out to fulfill his lifelong dream to see the wilds of South America. But rather than take a plane like anyone else, Carl ties thousands of balloons to his home and turns it into a giant hot air balloon. Right after lifting off, however, he learns he isn't alone on his journey, since Russell, a wilderness explorer, has inadvertently become a stowaway on the trip. Together they brave storms, the wilds of South America, and an angry mob of dogs as Carl tries to fulfill his dream of adventure and Russell tries to earn his helping the elderly badge. Like all Pixar films, Up features some superb animation, a great, fun-for-the-whole family story, and some life lessons along the way. Though Up isn’t all laughs, the first half hour of the movie covers Carl’s early days and is set in a montage that would make even Schwarzenegger cry. This part features several moments where almost the entire audience burst into a unified “awwwww”. Pixar has really done a superb job of endearing the characters to the audience and really bringing them to life while still retaining a comical quality. It is a testament to their continued creativity that they took a story that has seemingly been done a dozen times and brought it to life with well placed humor, a full complement of characters, stunning animation and excellent direction. While Up is thoroughly a great movie, it’s just great, not really really great. Pixar has already set the bar so high with movies like Toy Story, Finding Nemo, Monsters Inc, Wall-E and others, that Up feels like it needs to do more to belong in the same list. All in all, Up is a great film, but not at the level of other Pixar hits. |
